SV is great when its working. I'm not a video pro, just a home amateurist, so it has been great being able to do some fairly complex editing and get a really nice result. I do notice however, that sometimes during a final render it gets to really hitting the system hard, and then after the render, my computer gets into this impossibly slow running state, where I end up having no choice but to reboot by forced power off. Anyway, for now, the benefits outweigh the problems.
I'll keep it. But I don't use it for everything. I do a lot with womble. It's bare-bones simple, yes, but so good at the things it's designed to do. Really clean frame-level editing.
I really just use SV for the tough editing problems. It also handles a wider range of file formats than womble. Each has it strengths and weaknesses. Together they get the job done for me. I have depended on Vegas Pro daily for 4 years. It's a very robust and fast editing package. Previously I used Premiere as my main editor and after the first two weeks of using Vegas, I never wanted to use Premiere again. When you add the Boris Continuum Complete plugins to Vegas, you can accomplish almost anything.
One person found this helpful. Have used older version of this like Vegas 7. Vegas Pro 12 is great. Great for any amateur editor. Good program to learn on before moving on to the professional program. I like it! I tried Avid first but it would just crash my computer all the time.
I found Vegas far easier to use. I started on the Platinum which has a cool "show me how" tutorial system which is actually useful. Now looking at the list of features there is nothing I need as a hobbyist and educator on the Pro version that is not on the Platinum version because I don't use special effects. But even if you do plan to do special effects, then it may still be better to start on Platinum, learn the basics and then upgrade.
The Vegas suite are all great pieces of software. The only drawback I can think of, other than that all linear editors take a little while to figure out, is that with each new release of the Sony Software there are often bugs which cause the system to crash in early releases of the software as attested by some of the reviews of Sony Vegas Pro 13 right now.
These bugs are often the fault of external plugins. The only other downside is the support site which can be a bit chilly and possibly Japanese. I had an issue where I had two accounts that were associated on some parts of the sight but not on others. And I wish it or its little brother, would render to flash. See all reviews.
